Zhou Family Relief Fund
One of Yinghau Academy's kindergarten teachers, Caiyun Zhou, was greatly affected by the recent earthquake in Sichuan Province, China.
Here is a post from Yinghau's website if you would like to contribute.
"Zhou is from a rural area outside the provincial capital of Chengdu. Her family's houses and businesses were destroyed, including the school where her sister teaches and the school where her father was principal for more than 30 years. As a school, we would like to raise money to help support Zhou's family and community. Our primary goal is to provide financial support so that necessities such as food and water can be acquired. Additionally, we would like to raise enough money to repair her family's house, business, and especially, the severely damaged schools where her father and sister work.
Donations can be made in both cash and check form. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to Yinghau Academy, or brought to any Bremer Bank location. Please write checks to Caiyun Zhou: Zhou Family Relief Fund. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Yinghau Academy."

When Buying Chinese Books - Buy Simplified Chinese!
Be careful what you purchase when buying Chinese materials for home use.
There is Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Make sure you know what you are buying!
A word from Zhining...
It is important for parents to know that at this stage of our student learning Chinese, we are not ready to introduce Traditional Chinese yet. If we show them that there are two forms for one character it will be very confusing.

Wishes For the Sky- April 20 - 11-4
http://www.wishesforthesky.org/static/FLYER_Community_March3-1.pdf
Wishes for the Sky is a large-scale multidisciplinary public art event celebrating Earth Day.
Wishes for the Sky consists of wish-writing and kite-flying to create a large mobile in the sky; a bamboo wind chimes sculpture called House to Touch the Wind; a sound installation called Promises to the Earth; and a Wishmaking Pavillion. The experience is interactive and relies on attendees to make the collaborative work of art.
Wishes for the Sky is a day of wishing, a work of public art, and an expression of environmental sustainability inspired by ancient Chinese traditions of flying wishes on kites.
Bring a windchime. Please don't bring your own kite.
Supported by more than 20 organizations, this nature-inspired day of wishing was attended by 1800 people in 2007, its inaugural year.
Even with 1800 attendees we produced only 5 pounds of trash—a remarkable feat according to Eureka Recycling we set a new standard for sustainable event production.
Each year the first wish is given to Earth Day’s firstborn in St. Paul. The first wish for Earth Day 2007 was made by Senait Hadera for her baby son Remon:
Lucky Baby!
God give us peace for the world.
Lucky Baby is born.
Peace for everyone, peace for the world.
Amen.

Learning Mandarin
Zhining found a good web site for learning Mandarin online. It is created by Dr. Tienwei Xie. There are good sections describing Chinese language elements such as pronunciation, conversation, and characters and this site provides links to other good Chinese web sites.

Electronic White Boards for Next Year
Dr. Lawrence and the XinXing Steering committee are interested in writing a grant in order to get Promethian interactive white boards in the four XinXing classrooms by the start of the 2008-09 if at all possible. The cost for the board, projector, wiring, and staff development is about $7000 a classroom. If you know of any companies that tend to fund technology projects, especially for schools, please e-mail Dr. Lawrence with your suggestions. Thanks.
